This page contains writings and quotes for positive thinking. Being able to turn the negative in our lives into something positive can only help keep us on the road to success, whatever our goals are!

I enjoy writing and have posted some short articles that I have written below. I thought some of you sports minded people might find these articles interesting. Feel free to email me with your thoughts or comments.

The following two 'Daily Motivations' were not written by me, but I have them hanging where I can read them every day.

BIG THINKING PRECEDES BIG ACHIEVEMENT

-------------------------------------
Your limits are all in your mind.
What you envision you can do, you can do.
Start thinking of yourself as a success.
Success is a state of mind.

High achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation.
In the long run, you'll always hit what you aim at.
So why not aim high?

Believe in yourself.
Know in your heart, that you can do the job you've set out to do.
Always remember,
You can, because you think you can.

THE ODDS ARE WITH YOU IF YOU TRY

-------------------------------------
You cannot be beaten at anything
until you quit in your own mind.
There is no defeat except from within.
You have no really insurmountable barrier except
your own inherent weakness of purpose.

Consider yourself on a very long journey.
Sustain your personal vision of success.
In the end, you can only fail if you do not try.
Winning isn't everything, but wanting to is.

If you've got the nerve to make it, you will.
There is no failure except in no longer trying.
Success is a road paved with perseverance.

Do What You Enjoy

A recent statistic indicated that less than 10% of the American population exercises regularly. I personally know quite a few people who exercise regularly by working out in the gym. I know bodybuilders, powerlifters, people training for the strongman events and people who simply lift weights, run or walk to feel good and maintain health. Since my first day working out in the gym when I was 16 years old, I knew that I really liked the feeling I got from the workouts.

It's hard for me to understand, as an experienced athlete, why anyone would go through life not wanting to regularly engage in physical activity. To me, it's not about increasing the quantity of life necessarily - it's about increasing the quality of life. Most of us want to live a long time - but why would you want to live a long time if the last 20 years of your life are in poor health? I believe the main reason most people don't exercise is because they haven't found some sort of exercise that they enjoy. If you don't like lifting weights, why not try brisk walking? How about jogging, or swimming? Would you rather be on a walker at age 70 or easily climbing stairs at age 70? The choice is yours. When you find something you enjoy doing, it's easy to find the time for it. Don't try to make yourself do something you don't enjoy. You won't be able to stick with it.

Enjoy What You Do

There is another facet to this article called 'Enjoy what you do'. I mentioned the different types of athletes that I know or have met. I have competed in powerlifting since 1996. Over my years in the sport I have met people who compete for all the wrong reasons: collecting trophies to boost ego, trying to get another record even if it's not a personal best lift, or simply trying to beat someone else in a contest. The only reasons I see for competing in strength sports should be: (1) because you enjoy the training and (2) you are attempting to better yourself (obtain new personal best lifts or times). The only exception to reason number (2) would be that you are past your strongest years, and are simply competing because it motivates you to train hard.

Bodybuilding should be the same way. But more and more I see local level bodybuilders cutting each other down behind each other's backs. People aren't supporting each other and making it a positive, uplifting experience for all. I feel like saying to some of these people: 'Why are you even doing this?' Whether it's bodybuilding, powerlifting or strongman, competing should be done in a mature manner. It's always important to treat your competitors with respect. I have met some stuck up egoed-out competitors in the past, but I've also met some very humble competitors as well. It's the ones who are humble and respectful that I remember, and I have the utmost respect for them as well.

So the main idea to 'Enjoy what you do' lies in keeping the training and competing fun. If you find yourself becoming negative in your sport, take a good look at what you're doing that's made it a negative experience for you. Are you placing too much emphasis on winning? Are you pushing yourself too hard and expecting too much in too short a time? As a good friend of mine once told me:

The contest is only one day. You should spend the rest of your life training to be your best.

A Positive State of Mind

There will always be setbacks on the road to your goals. There's no way to avoid these setbacks, but you can't let that stop you. Learn from the bad days, get something positive out of them, and keep moving forward. There's no point in feeling bad for yourself. It's easy to sit around and say 'woe is me, I'm having a bad day.' You can spend a lot of time feeling sorry for yourself, a lot of people do, but every minute of the day that you spend doing that, you're losing precious time that you can never get back again. If you're in a negative state of mind, get out of it. Spend that time thinking about your goals and how you're going to get to them. What's the next step? Since it's lots of little steps to the big goal - think - what's the next little step? When you encounter a setback, maybe you need to revise your next little step. What can you do today to get past that setback and get back on track to your goals? It's easy to lose faith in yourself and wonder if you are really capable of achieving your goals. But whenever doubt enters your mind, let it go. Recall all that you've accomplished that you never dreamed possible in the past. The path to your goals is never easy, nor should it be. The harder you work towards something, the more it will mean to you when you finally get there.

The most important thing is to never lose faith in yourself. You can do it. The only way you're going to make it to your goals is by first believing in yourself. And remember that setbacks don't just happen to the amateurs. Even the greatest champions have setbacks, but obviously they don't let that stop them. You can become a champion if you have the right attitude and the right state of mind. It's easy to stop trying. Look at how many people never even start! You have the ability to separate yourself from the average person. Most people don't have goals and don't care. Little effort returns little reward, but great effort put into a goal gives immeasurable returns. It's always worth the effort.

The following was sent to me by a good friend via email. I found it very inspiring and read it often just to remind me that things aren't so bad:

The young man was at the end of his
rope. Seeing no way out, he dropped
to his knees in prayer. "Lord, I
can't go on," he said. "I have
too heavy a cross to bear.

The Lord replied, "My son, if you
can't bear its weight, just place
your cross inside this room. Then
open that other door and pick out any
cross you wish." The man was filled with relief.
"Thank you, Lord," he sighed, and he
did as he was told.

Upon entering the other door, he saw
many crosses, some so large the
tops were not visible. Then, he
spotted a tiny cross leaning against a
far wall. "I'd like that one, Lord,"
he whispered.

And the Lord replied, "My son, that
is the cross you just brought in."

When life's problems seem
overwhelming, it helps to look
around and see what other people are
coping with. You may consider yourself
far more fortunate than you imagined.

YOUR CROSS
Whatever your cross, whatever your pain
There will always be sunshine after the rain.

Back in the 1940's an esteemed children's/science fiction author by the name of C.S. Lewis wrote down a wonderful thought:

THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO ACHIEVE MUCH
ARE THOSE WHO WANT KNOWLEDGE SO BADLY
THAT THEY SEEK IT WHILE CONDITIONS ARE STILL UNFAVORABLE.
  FAVORABLE CONDITIONS NEVER COME.

Lewis was good friends with J.R.R. Tolkien and it's common knowledge that he encouraged Tolkien to finish 'Lord of the Rings' when Tolkien was discouraged and unwilling to finish the trilogy.

If you don't invest very much, then defeat doesn't hurt very much and winning is not very exciting.

Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its troubles. It empties today of its strength.

It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you deal with defeat or success that determines the champion.
