The Northwest Rolling Thunder Championships began in 2001 as the brainchild of Tod Becraft and Julie Havelka. They were inspired after attending the 2001 Rolling Thunder World Championships in Honolulu, HI during the Beauty and the Beast World Strongman/Strongwoman Championships. Tod and Julie decided to bring this exciting grip event to the Northwest lifting crowd. The Northwest Rolling Thunder Championships has been held every year since, in some form or another. The contest has traveled around the Northwest, as far as Spokane, WA. This year it returned to it's origin, the 'It's a Beautiful Pizza' parlor in S.E. Portland, OR.

Ironmind came aboard as the contest's sponsor, and provided winners and attendees alike with some great prizes.

Some of today's top powerlifting crowd made an appearance at the contest. Ryan Kenelly and Kara Bohigian came down to show their support and try out some of the restaurant's famous pizza. A meet promoter couldn't ask for a cuter trophy girl, as Kara was recruited for the job. :) She did a great job.

- Quote of the night: 'This trophy's heavy! They need to make some supportive gear to help me hold it!'

                                                                                                   -Kara, while holding the trophies

-Lift of the night: Morgan Guthner's 213.5 lb RT pull

-Battle of the night: The female competitors, who tied in the end. We handed out the trophy to the lighter gal. Great effort ladies!

-Strength feat of the night: Morgan closing the Captain's of Crush No. 3 gripper. Morgan is the first man in Oregon to accomplish this feat.

A special thanks goes out to:

~Carl, owner of 'It's a Beautiful Pizza'

~Jan, Kim and Anthony Becraft, for scoring and picture taking

~Randy Strossen of Ironmind for his generous support

~Noel Fuller of Jungle Gym for letting us use weights from the gym

If you missed out this year, don't worry, the Northwest Rolling Thunder Championships will be back again next year. We hold this event every year as a way to promote grip training, but it's also a good reason to sit down with friends and enjoy each other's company and lifting stories. The pizza and beer is an added bonus, too! :)
